Born
in Rome in 1932, moved to Trieste where lives and works.
Vittorio Costantini started his artistic career in 1977, or at least
his exhibitions, if we omit his first group show at the Palazzo delle
Esposizioni in Rome in 1964. So, basically for him painting is a love-standing
love, an existential passion. Obviously it is not simply a passion,
since, before facing the public Costantini waited for a long time for
his personality, as a man and as an artist, to mature. The time from
1966 to 1977 was devoted to the study of technique, colour, light effects:
silent, useful work.
In those years Costantini worked on a single genre - still life - in
all its opportunities. It was a kind of work intended to sharpen the
language necessary to understand the composition, the subdivision in
volumes of his work. Between 20th century art and metaphysics, Costantini
did not stick to one or the other but gradually in these years he has
stepped to more ambitious and greater achievements. Colours, once rich
of matter, get less and less thick. Canvases reveal their materic contribution
while contrasts between objects and background disappear. Everything
blends in delicate hues and poignant atmospheres. Enriched with new
experiences, where mannerism is reduced but not neglected, the painter
makes a start in landscapes, human figures, experiments inspired by
his congenial metaphisical vein.
The colour spread in its bright tones, the neatly rendered volumes,
the well-balanced composition, his will and freshness in the new phase
show a vitality ready to face reality which is intended to arouse reflections
overstapping the sheer artistic enjoyment.
